Modern department was created in 2005 on the base of the department of history of Ukraine and the department of politology and law. It provides teaching of the proper disciplines at all faculties of VNTU. Creation of the department is connected to the necessity of imrovement of humanitarian knowledge of students. At the beginning of the 1960s the general department of public disciplines was founded. The main disciplines of the department were «History of KPSU», «Scientific communism», «Political economy», «Pedagogics», «Sociology», «Law», «Theory of socio-political relations», «Psychology».
